The President of Argentina, Dra. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, presented in video conference with the Center for Computer Simulation Technology Application (CSC CONICET), Institute of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research, the TUPAC supercomputer, a platform of high technology modeling.
From the CSC, located in the Technological Scientific Pole, they led the ceremony the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Lino Barañao; President CONICET, Dr. Roberto Salvarezza; President of the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion, Dr. Fernando Goldbaum; and the project manager, Dr. Eduardo Dvorkin.
In the words of the President of the Nation, "this inauguration is an honor for all Argentines. Science and technology is one of the basic pillars of this model and gives us autonomy, which is the key of today and tomorrow. "
Meanwhile, the minister stressed that TUPAC Science "is a sign of high technology in the service of economic and social development of the country". He added that "it has been a very important investment that will be placed at the service of all researchers in the country and even for the productive sector need this high computing power." TUPAC, equivalent to 12,000 home PCs, will be connected via fiber optic research centers all through the service provided by InnovaRed.
During the call, Dr. Dvorkin said the supercomputer "is necessary to work on issues of high technological development tool" and explained that the computer simulation allows, for example: "modeling hydraulic fracturing process for Vaca Muerta, the airflow around the wings of the aircraft for aircraft factory Argentina, and radar signals to collaborate with the company INVAP ". It also allows weather prediction models developed for the National Weather Service.
The installation of the supercomputer involved an investment of $ 1,212,486 and 2,745,785 pesos, contributed by the CONICET and the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion, under the "Waves Project" which manages the Argentine Fund Sector (FONARSEC) Agency.
From the launch of the supercomputer, Argentina is located, along with Brazil and Mexico, among the forerunners countries with this type of tool in Latin America. "It's an initiative that puts us at the forefront in the region in terms of these capabilities, you really will allow us to do studies with a very important economic and social level impact," said Dr. Barañao.
